Fun Outdoor Items and Activities to Keep Yourself Cool During Summer

It’s no secret that doing outdoor activities, or any activities for that matter, have been a bit difficult this Summer. Here are some great suggestions to make the most of the warm weather while being COVID-19 conscious.

Create Your Own Popsicles

Creating your own popsicles is a fun yet practical way to cool off in the heat. We would recommend purchasing a mold from somewhere like Walmart or Target in order to make the process as easy as possible. Any juice can be used as your flavor, especially fruit blends that are a bit thicker. Making a smoothie and putting it in the mold also works well and creates a better flavor blend.

If you want, you can also add fruit chunks into the popsicle for a bit more texture. It’s a great way to have a healthy (or not) snack for you and your family! When purchasing molds, be sure that they can go into the dishwasher for an easy clean.

Here is a recipe that worth trying out:

Berries and Cream Popsicles:

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups fresh berries

2 Tbsp honey or sugar

1 cup full-fat plain Greek yogurt

½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

Mash the berries until it becomes a puree texture, and then add in your yogurt, honey/sugar, and extract. Pour into your mold of choice, add popsicle sticks in the center, and then freeze for 4-6 hours. Depending on what kind of mold you use, we recommend running the bottoms of the mold under lukewarm water to make it easier to extract your homemade popsicle without breaking it!

Go Swimming

You’ll find that many public pools in your area might be either closed or deemed high risk due to the spreading the Coronavirus. With that in mind, now is a great time to take advantage of the creeks, lakes or oceans near you for a day trip! Keep in mind CDC’s recommendations for these areas.

Want some privacy? Look at getting a pool for your backyard! There are plenty of ways to build a pool in your backyard, ranging in price and quality. To get a small kiddie pool (which is great for kids) it’s pretty inexpensive and can be done with minimal effort. They’re great for smaller yards and property as well. If you want to spend the extra money, inflatable pools are sturdy and come in many sizes. Inflatable pools are great for family and friends and are great if you have inflatables you want to use!

Visit a National or State Park

It’s hard to stay active and while staying away from everyone else. Going to a local or national state park is a great way to take advantage of the outdoors and get some exercise. Around the DMC area, we recommend SugarLoaf Mountain and Shenendoah. These mountains have a variety of trails that range from easy to strenuous and can be good for kids and pets.

Going on a small walk or hike is also good for getting some exercise after being a bit cooped up inside! Remember to bring a mask just in case you stop somewhere before or after!

Create Your Own Movie Theatre

Social distancing with some friends? Create your own at home movie theatre! There are many projectors that can be purchased online through Amazon or Walmart, all at different prices.

Grab a couple of lawn chairs, a white sheet and some friends and have the ultimate night. To create a more authentic atmosphere, have popcorn and snacks for the movie and have people arrive in their PJs!
