Work n’ Play

Create a work-space at home that will make you never want to go back to the office!

Working from home will likely become the new norm post-covid. If you’ve found that teleworking is your new preferred lifestyle, here are some tips to transform your space from a temporary desk solution to a home office you won’t want to leave!

Embrace your Space

When you first started working from home, you most likely put your desk up against a wall somewhere and accidentally created a corporate cubicle. Since your desk is where you’ll spend most of the day, consider moving it to where the natural light is. Placing it facing a big window will also give you a view without any glare. If natural light isn’t an option, get some table lamps that offer a soft glow rather than relying on your overhead light.

However, if you find that you don’t have enough space in your home, take a look at how these designers made a spare closet into an office!

Invest in Pieces that Serve You

To find pieces that are both beautiful and functional, first, take a moment to consider your workflow – what tools you need on hand, the ideal amount of legroom, and how much filing storage should be nearby. When looking for inspiration, take everything you see on Pinterest with a grain of salt. Tiny desks and bar stools might look great in photographs, but they won’t accommodate your project files and lower back in the long run.

With that being said, don’t be afraid to splurge on the perfect chair. Set high standards when shopping and don’t compensate for comfort for design. Luckily, this shouldn’t be hard as most furniture designers know that comfortable desk chairs are high in demand.

Lastly, when in doubt, ask yourself these two questions: Would you actually work in this space? Will there be few distractions? This will inevitability prevent you from setting up in a bedroom associated with rest or a busy area with a lot of foot traffic.
